The story takes place in a world where the Lord Ruler, a living god, has ruled over the Final Empire for a thousand years.
The Empire is a dystopian society divided into two classes of citizens. The Lord Ruler’s chosen (the nobles), and a slave class, (the Skaa).
Feared and hated by the Skaa populace, the people turn to a charismatic rebel leader (Kelsier) in hopes that he can bring about the end of the Lord Ruler’s one thousand-year reign.
Sanderson’s characters are well-developed and their complex relationships and conflicts add depth to his immersive story, but his true strength lies in his incredible world-building skills.
Sanderson’s unique magic system in his stories sets him apart from his peers.
In the world of The Final Empire, the main source of “magic” revolves around the consumption and “burning” of specific metals (Allomantic metals) that are used to enhance individuals’ physical or mental powers.
A person who can only burn one metal is known as a “Misting”, while those born with the ability to burn more Allomantic metals are known as “Mistborn”.
At first, it might seem daunting to new readers, the thought of having to learn the laws of the story’s magical system. But Sanderson does a fantastic job of introducing his world-building elements organically, and in a way that the reader becomes very familiar with them quite quickly.
The Final Empire is an amazing tale and an instant classic, a must-read for epic fantasy fans
